The world is full of beautiful design. But what makes design worthwhile is not just how it looks. The Design Writer provides inspiration, not just through beautiful imagery, but also by uncovering the ideas behind design. This blog explores the concepts behind the work, making thematic links to provide a deeper, more nuanced understanding of why design matters.
The Design Writer is a blog by Penny Craswell, a Sydney-based editor, writer and curator specialising in design and architecture.
As well as editing The Design Writer, I am Creative Strategy Associate at the Australian Design Centre in Sydney and contribute to design magazines worldwide.
I’m a former Editor of Artichoke magazine, have held editorial roles at Indesign and Frame magazines, and also worked as Communications Manager at Woods Bagot. I have contributed to two books: the Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design and Glass: Art Design Architecture, and my articles have appeared in Belle, Frame, Indesign, Habitus, Urbis, Houses, Azure, AR, Mezzanine, Architecture Australia, Mark, Grand Designs Australia, Australian House and Garden, Artlink, Flash Art International, The Guardian and The Sydney Morning Herald.
I recently completed a Masters in Design at UNSW Art and Design on the topic of narratives in design magazines for which I received the 2017 Dean’s Award for Research Excellence.
The graphics and branding of The Design Writer were created by Sydney-based graphic designer and art director Danny Wehbe. Danny’s design plays on the idea of the lightbulb moment – thinking about design as well as looking at it – while the lightbulb filament shape forms a little dW for Design Writer. Danny is Senior Graphic Designer at Gensler Sydney.
Please send architectural, interior projects and objects, products, exhibitions and books to me for consideration. Email Penny at pcraswell [at] gmail [dot] com.
