About The Design Writer

The world is full of beautiful design. But what makes design worthwhile is not just how it looks. The Design Writer provides inspiration, not just through beautiful imagery, but also by uncovering the ideas behind design. This blog explores the concepts behind the work, making thematic links to provide a deeper, more nuanced understanding of why design matters.

About me

The Design Writer is a blog by Penny Craswell, a Sydney-based editor, writer and curator specialising in design and architecture.

As well as editing The Design Writer, I contribute to design magazines worldwide and recently published The Milan Report 2017 a self-initiated publication reviewing the Milan Furniture Fair with Giovanna Dunmall and Marcus Piper. I also work as Creative Strategy Associate at the Australian Design Centre in Sydney and consult for architects and designers on communications and marketing.

I recently completed a Masters in Design at UNSW on the topic of narrative in design magazines.

About branding

The Design Writer Brand

The graphics and branding of The Design Writer were created by Sydney-based graphic designer and art director Danny Wehbe. Danny’s design plays on the idea of the lightbulb moment – thinking about design as well as looking at it – while the lightbulb filament shape forms a little dW for Design Writer. Danny is Senior Graphic Designer at Gensler Sydney.
