Set within a vineyard in South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, 45 minutes drive from Adelaide, is Esca Blewitt Springs, a luxury off-grid retreat with prefabricated architecture by Das Studio.
The building is the second of two prototype suites designed by Das Studio and inspired by director Dino Vrynios’s travelling fellowship to research the world’s best practice in modular construction and prefabricated construction methodologies.
As a result of this research, Vyrnios, along with Das Studio co-director Sara Horstmann, was able to design a prefabricated architectural solution constructed off site, solving the problems of the site’s remote location.
“The main objective was to blur the lines of immersion in nature while providing all the usual creature comforts found in a luxurious city hotel,” says Vyrnios.
The suite was designed to complement the existing French provincial industrial style of the main building on site. The exteriors are black steel, while interiors feature whitewashed oak floors, warm timber cabinetry and furniture and lighting by JamFactory in Adelaide.
The building has impressive sustainability credentials as well – the suites use water harvested from across the site and a shared aerobic wastewater system shared with the existing suite on site, also designed by Das Studio two years ago.
Power is provided by solar panels, with a link to the grid as a backup. Materials selections, shading elements, double-glazing, insulation, air tightness and operability result in a reduced heating and cooling requirement and significant energy savings.
