Object Stories: Begin Again Again Begin bench by Luke Chiswell and Furnished Forever

By Penny Craswell

Begin Again Again Begin is a bench seat for waiting areas with a top-heavy shape and graphic detailing in handmade aluminium. The piece was co-designed by Luke Chiswell, and Rene Linssen and Elliot Bastianon of Furnished Forever, produced by Furnished Forever and is available from Canberra retailer The Modern Object, which is based in Dairy Road.

Too long to be a stool and too short to be a bench, the design takes its inspiration from “the types of large bench seats seen in art galleries designed to offer people moments of contemplation and reflection,” says Chiswell.

Made by hand, Begin Again Again Begin does not hide the welding marks at its seams, instead accentuating them with the letters of the words ‘BEGIN AGAIN AGAIN BEGIN’, which spaciously circle the top of the form in a stylised script. The letters are spread across the sides of the bench’s seat and then repeat, meaning the letters are not readable as whole words when seen from only one angle.

Available in pink, black and raw aluminium, the bench comes flat packed and can be assembled with a single tool. It also comes in a limited edition, screen printed package.
