Object Stories: Brody wingback armchair by Pinch

By Penny Craswell

Designed and made by London-based design brand Pinch, the Brody wingback armchair has a streamlined form that is inspired by the classic wingback armchair style.

The wingback armchair dates back the 1600s England when the wing shape of the seat and arms provided an extra buffer from cool breezes in draughty houses and cottages.

The style of the Brody wingback armchair, especially when upholstered in white, provides and update on the classic, while retaining the tall back and enveloping arms, perfect for a bit of 21st Century cocooning.

This piece is sister to the Brody low back armchair, both of which are designed and made in Norfolk, England by Pinch, a design brand founded in 2004 by Russell Pinch and Oona Bannon.

The Pinch website says: “Our upholstery is made in a small workshop, and the pieces are hand-made by a small team, and that makes a difference. Many of them have been upholstering for multiple years, and are in tune with making instinctively; they know how much or how little to tension the fabric to achieve the best shape and wear, to make pieces that will last well. This is not mass production, but this is labour intensive, and as they say, hugely satisfying.”

Practical, comfortable and stylish, it’s no wonder the wingback armchair continues to retain its popularity.
