Object Stories: Indre light by Nikolai Kotlarczyk

By Penny Craswell

Indre is a new lighting design by Nikolai Kotlarczyk for Rakumba, a double-wall capsule in mouth-blown technical glass that is suspended with an interlinking metal rod.

Australian designer Kotlarczyk was inspired by his adopted home in Copenhagen when creating the design of Indre, in particular the suspended catenary streetlights of the old city centre. Indre by means city centre in Danish.

“Indre captures that unique feeling of Copenhagen’s historic city centre. A prominent feature is its streetlights suspended from buildings to allow for foot traffic, bikes and cars,” says Kotlarczyk. “Indre captures that connection between lighting and architecture and brings it into the interior architect’s spatial environment.”

The design, which is created by hand by professional glass-blowers, was developed in collaboration with Rakumba, an Australian company known for developing original lighting design over a period of decades. The project was challenging because of the extreme precision required to create an internal light that appears to float within the external glass capsule.

“As an Australian expat with Polish heritage now living in Denmark, Nikolai brings a rich cultural mix, manifested in his nostalgic love of narrative, decoration and colour,” said Rakumba’s Michael Murray. “Nikolai’s natural chutzpah and freedom of thought, together with Rakumba’s structured design and R&D processes created a fantastic melting pot from which to draw something entirely new.”

In order to showcase Indre, Rakumba also teamed up with South African-based 3D artist and designer, Alexis Christodoulou Studio, to produce a suite of original imagery showing the light in a speculative environment.

Indre’s anchors are available in nero marquina, forest green and carrara marble, travertine or natural oak, complemented with slimline metalwork in gunmetal, golden, white or custom coloured.
