Project: La Fantaisie florist and cafe

By Penny Craswell

A florist and cafe is always a wonderful combination, allowing you to consume your hot beverages in amongst some flowers. Based in the Melbourne suburb of Abbotsford, La Fantaisie is especially appealing thanks to a beautiful interior by Bergman & Co.

The interior of La Fantaisie had good bones to start with, located in a two-storey Victorian building with brickwork, arched windows, a gorgeous entry door and generous proportions.

Burnished concrete floors and exposed-truss ceilings keep things simple, while raked render, troweled brick walls and slightly variegated tiles create a sense of texture.

One of the key features is an elegant, scalloped marble bar that was custom carved and has a blush tone with ripples of red and pink. The same marble was also used for the bench top behind, for an oversized basin and plinths for the flowers, and the bathroom basins too.

Cafe tables and chairs are in timber and leather, with linen curtains and arched mirrors and sconces adding personality. Upstairs, a brass-lined cocktail bar is the main feature of an extra space for functions.

Perhaps most striking in the whole interior is a pair of Gingko Brass Leaf wall light in white that beautifully frames either side of an arched door – a handmade piece that matches the handmade feel of the rest of the interiors.
