Design: Art Deco

By Penny Craswell

I’m excited to announce that my new book Design: Art Deco: Design Inspiration from Paris to New York will be published on 7 April by Hardie Grant North America. This is a richly illustrated sourcebook that traces the movement from the Paris salons of the 1920s to the skylines of Manhattan and the first great streamlined vehicles of the industrial age.

Art Deco was the antithesis to all that came before it. Where Art Nouveau sprawled out in arabesques, art deco’s lines were clean and strong; where the arts and crafts movement embraced natural forms, art deco forged an industrial aesthetic.

Design: Art Deco is your guide to the pioneering movement that influenced art forms including product design, graphic design, architecture, interiors, ceramics and textiles. Part design history, part inspiration, this fully immersive source book outlines the 60 key pieces and leading designers which defined the sleek and stylized forms of the Art Deco movement. 80 color photographs and extended features take the reader through the exhibitions of Paris, into the speakeasies of Manhattan, and aboard the first streamlined vehicles.

This collectable guidebook helps you learn the basics of Art Deco style through visuals including architecture, graphics, fashion, and interiors, and shows you how to incorporate these aesthetics into your home. You will discover the creatives and craftsmen that left their design legacy—from living room decor to the urban and technological architecture of the age.

Part design history, part inspiration guide Design: Art Deco profiles 60 key pieces and the designers who defined Art Deco’s sleek and stylized forms—spanning architecture, graphics, interiors, ceramics, fashion, and textiles.

For this publication, I wrote the introduction and features, and worked closely with London graphic design studio Elwin Street Productions to curate the selection of entries. Elwin Street conceived and designed the book, while Toronto-based writer Amy van den Berg wrote the entries.

Design: Art Deco launches simultaneously with Design: Mid-Century Modern by Jenna M. McKnight, together marking the debut of the Design series—a new collectable library covering iconic design movements, for enthusiasts, practitioners, and collectors alike.
