Melbourne Studio Garage, with coloured shingles by Krishna Cheung Architects

By Penny Craswell

Designed by Krisna Cheung Architects, this backyard project involves the creation of a double-story studio garage at the back of a Melbourne house, created as a stand-alone building that functions as a garage with single room studio above.

Built next door to Krisna Cheung’s earlier similar project Studio Garage, this example took the same form, but added another level of design detail through the use of coloured perspex shingles in pale blue, green and white.

The result is a translucent non-structural external wall that faces the backyard of the house, with distinctive fish scale shapes. The shingle wall can also be viewed from the inside where a timber staircase leads to the second storey, suitable for a working-from-home study with a small kitchen. At night, the facade lights up like a lantern.

The architects say: “We have been exploring and evolving this typology on narrow residential sites across North Melbourne… The challenge of this particular project then was how to evolve an already successful design. The pastel coloured Perspex shingles creating a playful polychromic ambiance inside the studio during the day and it glows like a lantern at night.”
