The Melt series of furniture and objects by Japanese designer Oki Sato from Nendo has been extended with a new green edition for Venice Glass Week 2021. The Glass to Glass exhibition at Fondazione Berengo’s Art Space in Murano also includes a chandelier-like installation made of the Melt pieces as part of the show, which is presented by WonderGlass and Berengo Studio.
Nendo’s series Melt, launched in 2019, originally included an armchair, a chaise longue, a dining table, a side table, a partition and a vase, all in clear glass and all with curved shapes created by forming molten glass over a pipe or mould. The idea was to let gravity do the work of stretching the glass to its final design.
In 2019, Nendo said: “I think flat surface glass stretched by the hands of craftsmen is beautiful,” said Sato. “I discovered the beauty of glass when I saw that the plate-like glass created a beautiful arch by its own weight, when lifted by a number of craftsmen. I wanted to combine those beautiful flat surfaces with curves to design this collection” (Dezeen).
The exhibition 2021 includes a new version in green, while also featuring a selection of clear glass pieces of Melt hung together to form a chandelier-like installation in the centre of the gritty warehouse space.
The exhibition is also at a second location, one of the oldest pharmacies in Venice in San Marco. Glass to Glass is on until 21 November 2021 and includes works by nearly 30 other designers and design studios, including John Pawson, Maarten Baas, Raw Edges, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and Tom Dixon.
