Object Stories: Record cabinet by Nick Pedulla

By Penny Craswell

Sydney-based furniture maker Nick Pedulla made this record cabinet from Black Oak with a contrasting Natural Oak with brass grilles for a couple who wanted a cabinet with custom measurements to house their record player, speakers and record collection.

The couple found Pedulla via a google search for Sydney custom furniture makers, and, as well as having specific measurements in mind, they also asked that the record cabinet be designed for ventilation. “The most important detail was having enough space for record storage as well as making it a piece to enhance the space, to provide a comfortable area while listening to music,” says Pedulla.

The whole cabinet was made in White American Oak with the external elements stained black to provide a contrast with the natural stain and the brass doors. “The brass grilles play a major role in this piece as they not only add a new texture and colour, but they also provide the necessary air flow required for the amplifier and other equipment that sit behind the brass.”

As well as having a good relationship with his material suppliers, Pedulla says the most important part of putting together a 100% custom furniture piece like this is that relationship with his clients. “I feel I’ve gotten to know a little bit about my clients personality and thats a truly important part of the process for me as part of their personality comes through in the piece I’m building.”

Nick Pedulla is a fully qualified cabinet maker who works out of his studio in Sydney’s Northern Beaches – he has over 15 years’ experience and takes after his grandfather who was a master craftsman.
